AT&T awards $14,000 to NORWICH PATHWAY TO COLLEGE AND CAREERS PROGRAM
NORWICH, CT – Sankofa Education and Leadership Inc. has been awarded a $14,000 contribution from the AT&T Foundation to support students in their pursuit of college and career goals.
The AT&T Foundation contribution will support student supplies, field trip transportation, scholarships, and other program expenses for the Pathway to College and Careers program, which provides educational, enrichment and mentorship programs to underserved high school students in Norwich.
“It is through these partnerships that students are afforded opportunities and increased options to choose their educational paths toward success,” Rep. Riley said. “I congratulate Sankofa Educational Leadership for their indispensable work and thank President John Emra and AT&T Connecticut for their generous support.”
Sankofa’s Pathway to College and Careers program will engage marginalized, under-represented and underserved high school students in three major areas: The Freedom 2 Be Creative, The Courage 2 Pursue Your Dreams and The Promise 2 Thrive and Succeed. Students will receive in-person or virtual learning assistance through workshops, guest speakers and visits to colleges.
“This invaluable contribution by AT&T Foundation will help prepare Norwich youth with the freedom and courage to pursue their dreams and the ability to thrive and succeed in college and in their careers,” said Ms. Carline Charmelus, Sankofa Education and Leadership, Inc. Board Chair.
“AT&T aims to identify programs that are making real differences in the lives of local students, and this college and career readiness program is a prime example,” said John Emra, President, AT&T Connecticut. “The effort to prepare and support students in pursuit of their college and career goals is an impactful resource for Connecticut’s youth, and we are very proud to offer our support.”
PATHWAYS TO COLLEGE
The Educational, Cultural and Enrichment Programs:
The health and economic stability of marginalized and underserved youth and families residing in the City of Norwich have been negatively impacted for the past two years due to Covid-19. Many of our families face day to day challenges with food, housing and transportation insecurity and therefore many of our youth cannot afford the opportunities to attend quality enrichment programs to help them explore career opportunities during the summer. The Exploration to Propel Program will provide marginalized and underserved middle school aged youth with opportunities to participate in enrichment programs that focus on increasing youth participation in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Pathways to College and Career Program
The Pathways to College and Career Program will focus on providing educational, enrichment, mentorship and internship programs in the area of STEM, Visual and Performing Arts, and Entrepreneurship.
The Freedom 2 Be Creative will engage students through workshops, forums and guest speakers both in-person and virtually to enhance student exploration of various careers and business opportunities, the Courage 2 Pursue Your Dreams will engage students by providing opportunities to visit colleges, art and cultural centers and businesses due to the fact many students do not have the available resources or transportation, the Promise 2 Thrive and Succeed will engage students through mentorships, internships and local, state and national opportunities to participate in competitive and non-competitive opportunities
Sankofa Education and Leadership, Inc. will collaborate with Norwich Public Schools (NPS), Integrated Day Charter School (IDCS), Norwich Free Academy Office of Diversity and the NAACP Norwich Branch to market and identify diverse underserved, underrepresented, socially and economically disadvantaged middle school aged youth to participate in the Exploration to Propel
